Digestive Health
Many chronic disorders stem from problems with digestion and difficulty absorbing nutrients properly. A complete, well balanced diet does not insure that nutrients will be properly digested to transport vitamins needed throughout the entire body. Proper gastrointestinal function is also critical to properly eliminate toxic molecules, microbes and undigested food particles from the body in order to prevent infections, toxic reactions, allergies, and other health problems.

The harmful role of abnormal intestinal microorganisms in gastrointestinal disorders is well known. New research also shows how important the relationship between the gastrointestinal and other systems of the body is, including the neurological, hepatic, and immune systems. Here's an example: excessive growth of yeast produces toxic metabolites that can pass through the blood-brain barrier to alter neurological function. The result may be "brain fog," behavior problems, or learning difficulties. Byproducts from excessive bacteria can interfere with neurotransmitters and cause chronic fatigue. By the same token, beneficial bacteria help with vitamin absorption and preventing infections.

Even the byproducts of gastrointestinal microorganisms have recently been found to perform  major roles in human metabolism, development, aging and disease. For example, abnormal bacterial products of the amino acid tyrosine are elevated in psychosis, depression, autism and seizures, in addition to gastrointestinal disorders like colitis. Treatment of the overgrowth of bacteria shows promise with significant clinical improvement or complete remission of symptoms in a number of cases.
