An Ounce of Prevention…How Functional Medicine Can Change Your Life!
Optimal health no longer just ‘happens’. Optimal health takes conscious effort.
Let’s look at some sobering statistics about chronic disease (defined as lasting 3 months or longer, by The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics) for evidence that we need a different approach to managing chronic disease. More importantly, we need a better approach to preventing chronic disease.
The current state of health of our nation as follows:
- According to the CDC, chronic diseases affect 133 million Americans.
- By 2020, that number is projected to grow to 157 million, with 81 million having multiple conditions.
- Half of all adults have a chronic condition.
- 8 percent of children ages 5 to 17 were reported by their parents to have limited activities due to at least one chronic disease or disability.
- More people are living with not just one chronic illness, such as diabetes, heart disease or depression, depression, but with two or more conditions.
- More than 75% of all health care costs are due to chronic conditions.
- Four of the five most expensive health conditions are chronic conditions:
- Heart disease
- Mental disorders
- Pulmonary conditions
We are at an impasse with chronic disease management and health care expenditures.
Simply put, we can no longer afford to get sick. It’s hard to imagine that in this great country of ours, we have the volume of chronic health challenges reflected by these numbers.
The time has come for a radical transformation in health care to end needless suffering and bankrupting costs.
Functional Medicine is a personalized approach that intends to get to the root cause of symptoms in order to restore balance in each individual. By integrating traditional Western medical practices with what are sometimes referred to as “alternative” or “integrative” approaches, each person is supported in the best way possible to regain their natural state of health again. Functional medicine emphasizes prevention and/or reclaiming one’s health through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, and/or stress-management techniques.
“More than ever everyone needs to be encouraged to prioritize quality of food and needed supplementation as the ultimate answer to our costly health care crisis. Preventative medicine is pennies on the dollar as compared to the cost (on many levels) of falling prey to the so called “health care system”.
